Shooting From Roads and Vehicles
Another common violation officers have to deal with is hunters shooting from a road. Colorado regulation states that a hunter must be a minimum of 50 feet from the centerline of any state highway, municipal or county road, as designated by the county. Many counties also work with the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) to use the Motor Vehicle Use Map (MVUM), which are available at local USFS offices.
It is illegal to not only shoot from a road but also shoot across or down a road. If the bullet, arrow, or bolt you fire or release would have to cross over a road in order to hit its intended target, that is an illegal and dangerous shot and should never be taken. It is the hunter’s responsibility to know where roads are in the area they are hunting so they don’t accidentally shoot over a road without knowing it is there.
